Feedback from this Trimester

This is the last assignment that we need to do. However, I've learn a lot of things this trimester although it is a short sem. First of all, this is my first time doing exhibition booth with limited spaces. Thanks to Mr Zul and Mr Deepak which willing to guide us through out this semester. Besides, those meant comment somehow helped me in my design. Although is a rushing sem, but I kind of enjoying the assignments. The navigational sign for the 1st assignment and the exhibition booth for the 2nd assignment. In addition, I like the process of it which help me in gaining more experiences. For example, Mr Zul taught us how to make use of all the space for a limited area of a exhibition booth. This might help us in our future where limited space are provided from the clients. Last but not least, I kind of hate blogging but somehow I did manage to finish it and it wasn't that bad at all.

Thank you!!

My 3D model of the exhibition booth.

These below pictures are my 3D model of my booth. The first picture is facade and side view of the exhibition booth. The second one is the top and 3/4 angle view of my Tag Heuer Exhibition Booth. Last but not least, the artist impression where I put in some human figure just to show how will it look like when it comes to reality.

Bird Nest

Beijing National Stadium

The special of the Bird Nest..

The Beijing National Stadium which also known as the "Bird Nest" for its unique architecture. This stadium is being built for the purpose of Olympic which held on China March 2008. They have tracks, field, opening and closing ceremonies for this current Olympic. The stadium can fit in around 100,000 seats of spectators during the Olympic but it will be reduced down to 80,000 after the games. The stadium is 330m long by 220m wide. Besides, the height of the stadium is 69.2m tall. This particular stadium also has a 250,000 square meter for the gross floor area in the stadium. It is to be built with 36km or unwrapped steel, with a combined weight of 45,000 tonnes. Moreover, the stadium will be using Solar PV system which produced by Suntech Power.

Not only the Bird Nest, they even have a what so call a Bubble Building which look exactly like bubbles from outside. However, this 2 particular buildings are very unique in the way of structure and architecture. The design is not only for fitting the concept but also have their own purpose. The Bird Nest seem to be a very innovative ways for green solution. The stadium itself have a natural and passive ventilation system, a roof which are translucent so that the green inside can have enough sunlight, and lastly the system that collect rainwater.

Point of Purchase .Part II

DESCRIPTION OF POP

This entry is continued from the last one. I'm going to describe and explain about my product and the display itself. First of all, Sumber Ayu Feminine Wash is a first product that is using betel leaf as the main clean agent. Besides, this product do not contain any soap in it. It is made out of all organic substances without any chemical. So, I based on the product's unique selling point, which is the Betel Leaf as my theme for my Point of Purchase. The center part of my point of purchase will be covered with artificial betel leaf because betel leaf are crawling plants. With the logo at the middle, it helps to grab attention of the customers easily. However, there are a few description of the products on front of POP. This will help to consumers to know which products they should choose and which suit them more.

Point of Purchase

What is Point of Purchase and what is the main purpose of it?

Everyone know Point of Purchase is a place where the company products positioned in a shop. Based on my own knowledge, I think that product placement plays a very important role in helping the company rise their sales. However, the very main purpose of a point of purchase are for the company to introduce new products or maybe to let the customers or audiences know and understand more of your product and the company. However, there are many types of point of purchase such as island, gondola, bucket, etc.

The product that I'm assign with is the Sumber Ayu Feminine Wash. There is a design from me for the POP of this particular product. The below image is how my POP for the feminine wash going to look like.

This is the digital form of my POP for Sumber Ayu that compare to human size form.

Elements of Arts

Element of Arts

There are a few elements of arts which are the basic units of a visual image. These elements are space, line, color, shape, texture, form, and value.

Space

Space is the area provided for a particular purpose. It may have two dimension including length and width. This is for the floor, wall and others. Some of them even have height as one of the dimension. Spaces are all about the foreground, middle ground and lastly the background. They will be shown by using distances or areas. The background image will be more blur and not much detailed while the fore ground and middle ground will be big and clear.

Lines

Line are made out of points. From lines, it form a shape when a line join together. Doesn't mean only straight line can form shapes, even curvy lines, zig-zag, dash, parallel or lots more will form shape.

Colors

Colors can only be see with lights. Without light, everything will be black and dark. That is why after rain, rainbow appear in the sky because of the refraction of the light rays. Colors can be grouped into 2 different type; Primary colors, secondary colors and lastly the tertiary colors. Besides, from the primary colors, there are categories into 2 type which are cool and warm colors. Warm colors are red, yellow, and orange while cool are blue, green and purples.

Shapes

Shapes are defined as an enclosed area of lines. Shape can be differentiate into 2 groups, organic and geometric. Organic shape are those which shape like jelly or others that don't really have a edges or symmetric faces. On the other hand, geometric shapes are like square, triangle, rectangle, circle and the others.

Texture

Texture is the feeling of the surface of the objects. It can be rough types such as sand paper, rocks, wood, and others. It also can be smooth like silks, cotton, etc.

Form

Form is a 3D like of an object. It have 3 dimension which are top, side, and front. It also have different groups which are geometric or natural. geometric form are the one which is made by man while the natural are the organic form.

Value

Value are the quantity of light or dark on the objects or surfaces which also called a tone according to the depth and perspective of the object.

Principles of Design: Balance.

What is balance in Principle of Design?

Balance in design is just like balance beam we normally saw in traditional clinic.
Imagine one picture full of colorful bright colors, Do you think it will be nice to look at it? Don't you think is a bit too much? No one would like to see a poster design or painting which don't have a rest point. It will make the audience more dizzy and confuse or maybe even worse. However, everything should have its' own balance including taste, colors, contrast, light and shadow, and others.

For example, the flower below. It is blended with red, black and white. White part is consider a resting area which same goes to black. However, red colors are the major color in the picture. First of all, we can see on the right side which the white colors are located. It is full of tiny little flower petals which is we make it red or black, it will be too much. To balance it up, the artist put white onto the tiny petals which allow them to be balance.

Some goes to this cliff. The balances of colors and object in the picture.

Besides, there are a few elements of balances. First of all, symmetrical balance, asymmetrical balance and lastly radial balance.

Symmetrical balance also called the mirror balance which the left side of the picture and the right side is symmetry just like a reflection from mirror.

Asymmetrical balance is that balancing both side with different size of object or colors. Maybe on the left and right are big buildings while between them are lots of small buildings that are positioned far away which balance the picture up.

- balancing by colors
- balancing by value
-balancing by lines
-balancing by textures
-balancing by shading
-balancing by position and eye direction

Radial balance is the third type of balance where all the objects in the images or photo radial out from the very center.

My Exhibition Booth

These are the design of my exhibition booth for Tag Heuer.

The below are my concept board that I plan to insert into the booth and also the graphics board which all the graphics that will be in the booth or outside. I plan to make this particular booth into something else which are way different from their normal booth.

Graphics Board

Concept Board

This is how my design will look like in a form of plans, facade and side view of my design.

As you can see, there is a F1 sports car on the left side of my booth which is real. You can sit into and feel the feeling of a F1 driver when they are in the car. At the center, there are a big watch of Tag's new model just right behind the reception which positioned in front of the entrance. Besides, I prepare a resting zone which are right behind the huge watch. If people look straight from the resting zone, they can see bunch of galleries in front of them. However, I also have a product placement on the right hand side of the booth. Around the product placement, I positioned a few LED television just to show the history, the timeline of Tag Heuer's company. I think that might help the customers get to know more about Tags.

Concept Board

What is a Concept Board?

Concept board is a visual direction that enable the clients to explore without using the images or the final content. By using a concept board, it helps a lots between clients and designers. Designers will prepare a set of different pictures for a single concept of ideas in colors compositions, graphics, the feeling and others. The designers will fit all of those into a concept board and show it to the clients for approval. By the way, that is all for a concept board to communicate out the ideas of the designers and the message that convey through a concept board.

This is the concept board that I did for my exhibition booth.
I plan to make my booth look more classy and sporty.

Below there are a few samples of concept board

My Research of Exhibition Design

Exhibition Studies

A booth for exhibition has a very important role in attracting more costumers by letting them know about your company, products and purpose. Besides, it is not a simple and easy job to convey a message truth a booth to the consumers. There are a few ways that might help which is get to know more about your target audiences. Who you are targeting now; is it teenagers, kids or adult and is it female or male. All the information are very important. The most important facts which you need to know the most is to understand your target audiences. For example, if you product is targeting kids maybe the booth you can make it more colorful, which those elements that will attract the kids. There are a few that booth which I think is special and that apply as one of my concept too. For example, Motorola exhibition booth. It is more to futuristic like of booth which are very interesting.

The below are the pictures of booth that I think is interesting.

Well, I'm doing a exhibition booth's design for Tag Heuer.

The usual exhibition booth from Tag Heuer are just a normal and simple booth which are open spaces in a mall as you see in the picture below.

I'm going to make it more classy and sporty in a way of inserting some of the elements of sports and playing with the colors of the booth in and out.

This is my Navigational Sign

DIRECTIONAL SIGN
EMPIRE MALL

This is all about my navigational sign for Empire Mall. This particular sign will be positioned inside the parking lots. This sign is sign that guide the customers exit from the parking lots because the current of Empire Mall's parking sign is a bit confusing. The concept of Empire is more towards luxuries and classy so I had using this as my final for assignment 1 "Directional Sign". The big arrow is to show the right direction of the exit or entrance of the parking lots. I've using bright yellow as the color for the arrow because yellow attract people's attention easily. Besides, there will be wording on the arrow that guide the customers out.

The below are the images of my Directional Sign.

This will be the final look of the navigational sign in digital form.

This are parts dismantle from each faces of the sign.

Creative Advertisements

Interesting and Creative Ads.

Firstly, what is advertisement?

Based on my knowledge, advertisement is a form of communication that delivers messages to the audiences and for the purpose of persuading the audiences to take some actions. Normally, a advertisement need a medium for them to convey the messages. The medium can be anything, on a empty wall, bulletin board, newspaper, television, radio, internet and others. However, a medium is just to help by placing the advertisement where the audiences can see, feel and listen to.

Besides, the more interesting and creative ideas of the advert, the better the chances to attract more audiences' attention. There are a few interesting and creative ideas that being convey into the advertisement below.

JAWS as a poster at railway station. (Film Festival)

Ads by NIKE shoes.

Ads for travelling zoo on a bus.

Ads from Kit-Kats.

Colors

What is Colors?

The below is picture is the chart that created by Ewald Hering (1834-1918). He is the one that devised the first accurate theory of color vision.

There are 2 different groups of colors. 1 is being categorized as cool color and another one is warm color. The cool colors are blue green while the warm colors are red and yellow which not including white and black. Besides, the main primary colors are red, blue and green. From this primary colors, it form the other colors by mixing each of them. For example, red mix with blue; it form magenta while green mix with blue cyan will appear. However, if all the colors mix together, they will definitely became white. Even printers, graphics software are using RGBs or CMYKs and maybe lots more in their system just like Adobe Illustrator (using CMYKs), while Adobe Photoshop (using both CMYK and RGB).

In addition, I'm a person with interested in colors. They are interesting and fun to play with. Just imagine what if the world is without colors, everyone will look almost the same and the world will definitely boring which they will never differentiate the different of each objects cause they are all in black or white.

Murphy's Law in Design

What exactly Murphy's Law all about?

Anything That Can Go Wrong, Will Go Wrong.

This is very true. Anything that can go wrong by chances, will definitely goes wrong. Based on my own experiences, there are this one time which I'm rushing for assignment. According to plan, I can finish the particular assignment 1 day before the assessment but somehow it turns out to be I screw up being late to the presentation even thought I started the assignment 1 week early. This is all because of the software and the printer. The software keep crashing and crashing which slower down my assignment. Even the printer goes wrong. It won't print the file that I send to the printer. However, I get it done by the day of assessment. After I finished everything, I quickly rush to the printing shop to print. By that time, I found out that I used the wrong word size for the printing. It is way too tiny. So, I spend another 20 minutes correcting everything which lead to late submission. Yup, anything that can go wrong will definitely go wrong. Human being is not programmed like robots or machines. Even programmed intelligent will go wrong too. Nothing in this world is perfect.

Container As Content.

Based on my own understanding, the purpose of container as a content is to deliver messages to the audiences. However, there are many ways to show a message on the container. One of them are poster on empty walls, typographic on walls, and lots more. By using all those methods, a empty boring white wall can be transforming into an interesting area where will grab attention of the audiences anytime. Below is the example of container as content.

Transparent poster which will only appear clearly under lights.

Printing of shapes with colors.

Sign Board.

SIGNBOARD!

The purpose of sign boards are to guide and lead the people to their destination. There are lots of signboard along the road which some of them are use to give warning to the drivers. For example, this particular signboard is to let the drivers know that the next 15 miles, there will be a winding road which are dangerous. Normally, the signboard will be positioned in a suitable place where the drivers can see it clearly. By the way, this is a bad example for signboard.

Based on my own experiences, signboard in Malaysia is very bad. Some of them, even leads the drivers to different places. I still remembered clearly that I'm searching for the signboard to Dengkil from Cyberjaya. I only saw one of them which clear enough to tell me which way is should go but still I missed turn in the highway. This happen because the positioned the sign exactly right in front of the turn which being covered by trees. You can see the below picture that is located in Petaling Jaya. The signboard are just right in front of the turn which if you miss it, you will be going to have a long 'U' turn to do.

Purpose of Pylons

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF PYLONS?

First of all, I wanted to share some of my opinion and let the others know about what is Pylon and what is the purpose of it. Based on my own opinion, pylons are a huge and tall sign which normally use for malls, hotels, companies, petrol stations, and etc-etc. The purpose of the pylon is to help people get to their destination correctly. For example, the pylon below (GREEN VILLE), this particular pylon is position right in front of the Green Ville mall which allow people to know from far. When the customers saw that sign, they know the Green Ville Mall is just around that area.

GREEN VILLE MALL's PYLON

Besides, some of the pylon might not be very big or very tall, but somehow it lead or guide people to the place. For example, like this pylon below, Smithsonian Station. Other than just design and simplicity, some of the pylons also use display of advert or speakers that promote the place itself. It's depends on how the designer wanted to communicate with the audiences (customers).

SMITHSONIAN STATION's PYLON

(This is the normal pylon which attached with speakers.)

MCDONALD's PYLON

Just like the McDonald's pylon below. They light it up at night so the customers can see it clearly and head towards them. Their concepts are simple and attractive because people already know that the yellow "M" resemblance McDonald.

However, no matter how nice is the design of the pylons, if it can't communicate with the audiences than its consider failed. Normally, the people will only look for the pylons just for a few second and they will know which route they should use to go to the destination. If the pylon leads the audiences to the wrong direction or destination, means that there is no reason for the pylon to be there.
